Building a Small Business Website 5 Key Components to Include

If you’re building your first small business website, it’s important to know what to include in order for it to be a great success!

When designing your small business website, make sure it includes all of these 5 key components.

1. Clear Calls-to-action

A call-to-action – or CTA – is defined as a piece of content, usually a button or link which has been designed and placed exclusively to get your viewer to perform a specific action. E.g. ‘click here’, ‘email us’ or ‘download your free…’

CTAs are vital in capturing leads and should be visible throughout your website. If you have lots of text and imagery on your web page, CTAs are useful at the top and bottom of the page, but they must be distinguishable.

2. Contact Information

A contact page should be visible in your site’s navigation bar and you should regularly check that all of the contact information you have provided is up to date.

3. SEO Optimisation

Check your SEO optimisation using a plugin to let you know how your pages are performing and where they could be improved. Customise your meta descriptions, include keywords throughout your site and regularly update your site’s content to help keep your site optimised!

We also recommend including an SEO blog on your website.

4. Keep it Simple

Nobody wants to trawl through 10 pages of info just to find out one specific piece of information! Make your site as concise and as clean as possible. Research has shown that people scan websites, they click on your site looking for something specific and they want to find it fast! If they can’t, this leaves your brand at risk of handing over business to your competitors!

5. Provide Proof

Providing social proof on a website is based around the psychology of following the crowd – the idea that if other people are doing it, it must be good! Show your site’s visitors that you’re a valuable and trusted provider of products or services used by many others just like them. Testimonials are useful to put a human face and certification on the quality of your business. Likewise, displaying logos of companies that you have worked with or places you have been mentioned e.g. ‘proud supplier of…’ or ‘as seen at…’ creates a similar trustworthy feel and assists in developing your brand.
